IOT Services

The SAP Internet of Things (IoT) Platform consists of the following four runtime entities:

›› IoT Core contains most of the tools and technologies used to develop, deploy, and operate IoT applications, and are built on the HANA platform.
›› IoT Connectors are responsible for data and protocol adaptation between actual devices and device models of the IoT Core.
›› Device Adapters Device Adapters are responsible for bidirectional communication between devices and an IoT Connector.
›› Device Agents are needed for communication with device adapters.
IoT Core :- IoT Core contains most of the tools and technologies used to develop, deploy, and operate IoT applications, and are built on the HANA platform.

›› The device modeling component represents the structure of devices, their functions, their data, and their relationships to their real-world environment in a uniform way across all IoT applications - these models appear natively and naturally in other HANA-based products and technologies.

›› For example, an IoT application that wishes to create a Lumira dashboard or use the HANA predictive analytics library will see device models in a manner that is native to these tools.

›› The device communication component allows IoT applications to communicate with devices in a uniform way based on the device model, taking care of the details of Internet-scale communication across a variety of protocols. The primary deployment option for the IoT Core is within an SAP-managed cloud. Here, the preferred option is a multi-tenant deployment, but a single tenant option (such as HANA Enterprise Cloud) will also be provided. In addition, the IoT Core will be made available for on premise deployment in specific SAP-defined landscapes.

Device Adapters :-Device Adapters are part of IoT Connectors, and are responsible for bidirectional communication between devices and an IoT Connector.

Each device adapter supports the protocols; data formats and command structures of a specific class of device, whether they are standard or proprietary. Device Adapters may also be created for third party device management software (on premise or in the cloud), in which case the IoT Connectors communicate with devices through this software.

Device Agents :-Device Agents are components that run within the runtime of the devices themselves. Device agents are needed for communication with device adapters for devices that do not already support an external communication interface or whose interface is insufficient for the application in question.

BDI is working with SAP R&D team for custom development of SAP Internet of Things Platform.
